Henry IV – a nice king!

March 19, 2014

When Henry IV became King in 1593, he was immediately aware of the urgent problem with nutrition. As a good King, he undertook all the necessary steps to develop the agricultural sector.

A legend says that during a dispute with the Duc de Savoie, Henri IV said: « If God gives me some more time, every peasant in my kingdom will have a chicken in the pot on Sunday. »

Since the XVIIIth century, « la poule au pot » [a chicken in the pot] is very much a mythical dish, and forms part of the collective memory of the #French.

Henry IV was assassinated by the fanatic catholic Ravaillac, and remains one of the most outstanding personalities of #French history.
